Orchestra Theatro São Pedro performs jazz classics in a charity concert with the participation of pianist Luciano Leães and American singer JJ Thames.

The presentation, under the baton and artistic direction of conductor Evandro Matté, takes place on June 20, Thursday, at 8 pm, as part of the Collaborative Music Festival of Theatro São Pedro, an initiative of Sarau do Solar da Assembleia Legislativa RS, which will also be broadcast live on TV and YouTube.

 

Tickets to attend in person can be obtained for free on the theater’s website, upon donation of non-perishable food items or hygiene products on the day of the concert. The Orchestra Theatro São Pedro resumes its programming on June 20, Thursday, at 8 pm, with a charity concert to raise donations for artists and cultural workers affected by the floods. Under the baton and artistic direction of maestro Evandro Matté, the orchestra will present the unprecedented show “Jazz in Concert,” welcoming pianist Luciano Leães and American singer JJ Thames, known as the “Diva of Mississippi Blues,” to take a musical journey through the genre characterized by improvisation. The repertoire of the performance will include standards such as “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, “Blue Rondo à la Turk” by Dave Brubeck, and “In The Mood” by Glenn Miller, which will be orchestrated versions. The program also includes tracks like “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James, to be presented with the distinctive and velvety voice of the American artist who has impressed audiences worldwide with performances that stand out for their stage presence and vocal delivery.

 

The program is part of the Collaborative Music Festival, an initiative of Sarau do Solar da Assembleia Legislativa RS in partnership with the State Secretariat of Culture through the State Music Institute, Theatro São Pedro Foundation, Pró-Música Association of Porto Alegre, and RS Urgent Music Collective. In addition to attending the concert in person at Theatro São Pedro, the audience can also watch the live broadcast on TV Assembleia, on channel 11.2 or on the website, as well as on TV Assembleia’s YouTube and Facebook pages.

In total, there will be five charitable evenings of the festival.

The program starts on Wednesday (19) with the Sarau Luciano Maia Trio featuring Joca Martins, César Oliveira, and Rogerio Melo, and the Sarau Paola Kirst featuring Dionísio Souza, André Paz, and Stephanie Soeiro.

After the Orchestra Theatro São Pedro’s presentation on Thursday (20), the event will also host the RS Urgent Music Collective, featuring performances by more than 40 artists from Rio Grande do Sul on Friday (21); the saraus Ian Ramil and Banda Tetein and Nina Nicolaiewsky & Sucinta Orquestra on Saturday (22), as well as the Sarau Gabriel Selvage and Lucio Yanel on Sunday (23).

Throughout all presentations, donations will be requested via Pix from the RS Urgent Music Collective, created to assist musicians and workers in the sector who have suffered losses from the recent floods that affected a large part of the municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. JJ Thames (vocals) Known as the Diva of Mississippi Blues, JJ Thames is a native of Detroit, Michigan, USA, a city that has always been a fertile ground for blues and soul genres. The singer began performing as a child and has served as a backing vocalist for renowned bands such as Outlaw Nation, Fishbone, The Beat, Bad Brains, and Slightly Stoopid. Additionally, she has shared the stage with legends like Marvin Sease, Bobby Blue Bland, Peggy Scott Adams, Denise LaSalle, and Willie Clayton after following her heart to Mississippi. With her distinctive and velvety voice, she has impressed audiences worldwide with performances that stand out for their stage presence and vocal delivery. At 30 years old, besides recording a new album, JJ Thames has tour dates scheduled in Europe in November and a series of shows at festivals in Brazil in June. According to the Detroit Free Press, she is “young and beautiful, an excellent storyteller, and her vocals are consistently breathtaking. Her shows are electrifying and please the audience.” Depression Magazine highlighted that “she knows when to let her voice soar and when to pull back a bit. Want blues? Soul? Gospel? R&B? She masters all these styles and possesses a powerful voice that stands out among the best.”

Luciano Leães (piano and vocals) With about 30 years of career, pianist Luciano Leães has a remarkable artistic trajectory. The Brazilian instrumentalist and composer has shared the stage with names like Carey Bell, Hubert Sumlin, Jesse Harris, Tony Coleman, James “Boogaloo” Bolden, Annika Chambers, performed at events such as the Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada), New Orleans Jazz Fest (New Orleans), and Lucerne Blues Fest (Switzerland), and was invited to open for Elton John in Porto Alegre. In addition to his own work, the artist maintains an international career with permanent activity in the Southern United States, where he has been performing regularly for almost a decade. His music has been played on radios like the American WWOZ, and he has had albums and singles released in venues like the traditional Maple Leaf in New Orleans. His themes have been arranged by the Orchestra Theatro São Pedro, the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, and the Unisinos Anchieta Orchestra. He was awarded the Açorianos Prize both as an instrumentalist and as a musical producer.

Evandro Matté (conductor) He is the artistic director and conductor of the Orchestra Theatro São Pedro, the OSPA, and the International SESC Music Festival in Pelotas. He completed his musical training at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul; at the University of Georgia, USA; and at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux, France. Since 2006, he has been working as a conductor and has been a guest conductor for orchestras in Uruguay, Argentina, China, Portugal, Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Austria, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and the United States. In 2019, he was awarded by the French Ministry of Culture for the development of French arts in his artistic domain. Orchestra Theatro São Pedro Founded in 1985, the OTSP is committed to honoring everything that Theatro São Pedro represents. Since its inception, it has been maintained with the support of the private sector and a group of associates. With attributes of creativity, originality, and excellence, it presents a diverse program with works from the repertoire of concert music, opera, ballet, Brazilian popular and instrumental music, receiving renowned national and international soloists in its concerts.
